• ~ Numerous super-heated steam funnels ~ (steam devils) spin off from the massive plume like legs holding it up as lava pours explosively into the sea. #2
 • ~ Numerous super-heated steam funnels ~ spin off from the massive plume as lava pours explosively into the sea. The lava in the foreground is still hot and fuming.
 • ~ Twin super-heated steam funnels ~ spin off from the massive plume as lava pours into the sea.
The foreground lava is hot & fuming.
 • ~ Double Lava Plume Funnels ~

This plume is the result of a massive volume of molten lava shooting out of a lava tube that lies within the lava I am standing on while taking this photo.

The lava explodes as it hits the ocean water resulting in tremendous heat, steam, sulfur gas, glass particles, rock and sand. So much turbulence often spawns heat tornadoes or steam devils that look like water spouts. These spouts are about 80 and 120-feet long.

The blackness in the central base of the plume is black sand being instantly created as tons of molten lava meet the ocean.
 • ~ Ocean Entry Sunrise Lava Steam Rainbow ~

The first rays of sunrise touch the massive lava plume that is being generated by lava entering from underground tubes on the right. The steaming water is created by fresh lava rocks floating off from the exploding lava before sinking.

The lava originates from the Kilauea Volcano that 7 miles inland.

The first rays of sunrise touch the massive lava plume that is being generated by lava entering from lava tubes off the image to the right. The steaming water is created by fresh lava rocks floating off from the exploding lava before sinking.
 • ~ Boat Touring the Lava Flow ~

Waves crash ashore as the first rays of daybreak arrive, a tour boat slides along volcanic heated ocean water in front of where the active lava flow is entering the sea from a large underground lava tube, which is creating a massive plume that is being generated by lava entering from lava tubes off the image to the right. The steaming water is created by fresh lava rocks floating off from the exploding lava before sinking.
• Pre-dawn lava entering the ocean and exploding back onto land; creating a spatter rim.

Note- This is the same morning I shot my famous Dawn of Creation photo of this scene, which can be viewed here: http://www.leigh-hilbert-photography.com/Professional/Hawaii-Volcano-Lava-Photos/5485573_99fen#518238268_tefg5
The photo above will print as dark as it looks.

 • ~ Billowing Blast ~

Huge billowing steam and sulpur dioxide broil as motlen lava rocks blast through; all created by massive amounts of lava pouring out of lava tubes and directly into the ocean.
 • ~ Releasing Inner Earth ~

Lava pumps into the sea with explosive force, sending steam, sulfur dioxide, rock, ash, glass particles and tones of black sand skyward in a flash. The rock and sand return to earth close y but the rest of the particles sail for miles on the wind.
• ~ Waikupanaha Lava Explosions ~

Lava pours explosively into the ocean, as seen from directly inland behind the spatter-rim.
