We are looking down onto the Pulama Pali:
The black area on the right side is where lava came through a few months earlier. Above that, the gray area is a large area of hot and inflating lava with some active breakouts.
The smoke is from forests burning from molten lava advancing through. You can also see two sections of paved streets (lava flowing down one) and a red house; these are the last remnants of what once was a large subdivision called Royal Gardens. The home belonged to Jack Thompson. I helped him load his belongings into the two empty helicopters we are riding in when I took this, and the following three photos. Jacks house went up in flames from the lava an hour and a half later.
