Kilauea Volcano Active Eruptions

A strong lava flow from the Pu`u O`o eruptive crater raged through the mostly abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision starting (again) on December 2nd, 2011 and again in early March 2012; eventually reaching the Pacific ocean. The very steep terrain there created some spectacular action with the two types of lava rivers: a`a and pahoehoe. The lava stopped flowing into the ocean in November 2013.

In this double night rainbow photo you can also see the lava glow from three different eruptions. They are along the distant horizon left to right: Halema`uma`u Crater within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Pu`u O`o Crater eight miles north west of Kalapana Gardens, and the broader glow from molten lava surface flow breakouts located three to four miles northeast of Pu`u O`o.
