Just below this banding & roping pahoehoe lava is a massive lave tube moving tons of molten lava per second.

Pahoehoe lava slowly churns and covers older lava along the southeast shores of the Island of Hawaii while visitors walk the edges.

Pahoehoe lava rolls and churns and twists into wave-like roping bands as it spreads across older lava rock.
Pahoehoe 'rope' lava oozes and rolls into amazing shapes configurations. This one covers about eight-feet across. Taking photos this close is challenging for both the photographer and the camera because the intense heat of the molten lava.
For this photo I used a little bit of camera flash to help illuminate the raw iridescence of the slightly cooler dark lava.
I love the amazing forms Pele creates!

This field of lava is still very hot and is continuing to scorch the last remnants of forest along its path. The distant plume is where some of the molten lava has concentrated into underground tubes and pouring into the sea.

Brown-tinged fine glass & sand sparkle in the sun between cooling lava formations. The plume in the distance is where lava explosively enters the sea. The glass & sand are blown downwind for miles, which is another reason to always have a good respirator available should the plume winds turn in your direction.
