  • This anole lizard licks nectar drops off an octopus tree's berry-like blossoms The nectar oozes out of the little flowers when the heat of the sun hits them.   • Japanese White-eye Feeds on Ohia Lehua<br /> I really like these little birds. They keep very busy all day sucking ohia lehua flower nectar and plucking bugs off the trees. They originated from Japan I believe and are known there as Mejiro. One pair built a nest just off my deck a couple of weeks ago but they are very sneaky, and I seldom see those two. I am pretty sure they have laid the eggs but the nest is nearly completely hidden within the top forks of an ohia tree.

The `Io is also the only hawk native to Hawai`i. They only breed on the Big Island but have been occasionally seen on Maui, O`ahu, and Kaua`i. Fossil records indicate that this hawk may also been established on Moloka`i and Kaua`i. They depend on native forest for nesting, but are able to use a broad range of habitats for foraging, including papaya and macadamia nut orchards, as well as forests dominated by native and introduced vegetation, from sea level to 6,500 feet elevation.&#8221;

Then he ran around the floor carrying it like a new toy~<br /> <br /> We watched for a while to see what he was going to do with it. He would twist it back and forth once as if he'd caught a bug, then would drop it.

  • Giant Centipede / kanapi in Hawaiian These insects are scary and have a nasty bite&#8230; I have seen some the width of my thumb and 8-inches long; this is a smaller one at about 6-inches. They crawl very fast! Diet is most anything they can catch, like insects and even geckos.   • Praying Mantis on Finger Mountain<br /> <br /> My friend was in the drivers seat of my van when he announced that a tiny friend had suddenly appeared on his hand. While I got my camera out the mantis had made the summit of finger mountain :)
