• ~ Waimea Canyon, Kauai, Hawaii ~

The four-million years of erosion on Kauai have etched out the lava into a spectacular canyon in the middle of the southwest side of the island.
The record setting annual rainfall continues carving new shapes.
Kauai's longest river of 19-miles runs in this valley bottom.
 • Vast lavascape of molten and inflating pahoehoe lava with a few surges of a1a in the background-- The day before this area was a standing old forest: Pele givith and Pele taketh away ....
• Pu`u Hau Kea -- Massive Volcanic Cinder Cone - Snowboarders Delight!

Do you see the two snowboarders climbing up? No chair lifts on Hawaiian volcanoes! Well in a large print you will see them halfway up the mountain along the shadow line.(Or in my closer view image here)

Read a story about the snowboarders on this volcano, and more photos of these mountains here on my Flickr photo site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/57515799@N00/105718374
• Lava advances down the PULAMA PALI, HAWAII, destroying all forests in its path.
This lava flow covered Jack Thompson's home and property two days later (only 1000-feet from here). You can see the images, video and read my story about this on my Hawaiian Lava Daily blog that is linked in my header bar.
• Kalalau Valley Ridges -- A volcano etched by four million years of rain

Late day sun illuminates the eastern ridge of the famous Kalalau Valley on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, which rise over four-thousand feet from the sea.
 • Rays over the Big Island, Island of Hawaii, lower Puna area.

Printing suggestions: To retain full-frame prints select NO-crop option during purchase.
 • Observatories atop Mauna Kea volcano on the Island of Hawaii

These are at the 13,700-foot elevation. There are thirteen main obseratories; considered the best viewing of the heavens in the world. They even seem to jut up into heaven here ;)
• Just after sunset, looking for that last run of the day, a lone snowboarder treks across a moon-like volcanic landscape near between the two massive cindercones on Mauna Kea volcano, Island of Hawaii.

~ No chairlifts on this mountain!

 • ~ Pele Meets People ~

Pahoehoe lava slowly churns and covers older lava along the southeast shores of the Island of Hawaii.
 • Royal Gardens_2700_ Lone figure

Looking down from a steep section on the Pulama Pali in Royal Gardens. In the fore & backgrounds you see some older (Feb. 2010) pahoehoe lava forms and far below are rivers of a`a lava creating massive mounds and fields; the dark areas are just-cooling a`a - two previously killed ohia trees smoulder from the heat.. This is being feed by continuous supply from the crater four miles further up --
For perspective, a lone hiker (red speck upper left) gazes on near the fifty-foot tall dead burning tree snag.
