A massive explosion takes place at the base of the plume where molten lava is pumping into the ocean on the Island of Hawaii.

The plume is comprised of steam, sulfur dioxide, glass particles, ash, rock, and black sand. As the molten lava pours out of the lava tubes that carried it from the volcano above, it instantly explodes into black sand and rock fragments. Many of these molten chunks will continue floating and steaming on the ocean.

  • ~ The Photographer ~<br /> <br /> Winter Solstice Full Moon Lava on the southeast shores of the Island of Hawaii.<br /> <br /> (Note the fellow photographer and tri-pod across the molten lava. This guy became trapped there when the lava came down behind him and into the ocean. He was able to find a narrow passage between the flows and head uphill until he found a patch of cooling lava to cross. He burned his boots but survived. Others have not been so lucky.)

  • ~ Pele's Inner Essence Meets Atmosphere ~<br /> <br /> Pahoehoe 'rope' lava oozes and rolls into amazing shapes configurations. This one covers about eight-feet across. Taking photos this close is challenging for both the photographer and the camera because of intense heat from the molten lava. A light camera flash helps illuminate the raw iridescence of the slightly cooler dark lava.
  • ~ Pahoehoe Molten Lava ~ <br /> <br /> This photo covers about 35 feet of actively oozing molten lava called pahoehoe (pah-ho-ay-ho-ay) in Hawaiian.<br /> In the distance is the volcano Pu`u O`o, the source of the lava.<br /> This lava flow is on the Big Island of Hawaii, 2004. These will be part of a larger lava series I am working on.
