Pahoehoe lava rolls and churns and twists into wave-like roping bands as it spreads across older lava rock.

~ Pele's Palate ~

Pahoehoe 'rope' lava oozes and rolls into amazing shapes configurations. This one covers about eight-feet across. Taking photos this close is challenging for both the photographer and the camera because the intense heat of the molten lava.
For this photo I used a little bit of camera flash to help illuminate the raw iridescence of the slightly cooler dark lava.

~ Pahoehoe Molten Lava ~

This photo covers about 35 feet of actively oozing molten lava called pahoehoe (pah-ho-ay-ho-ay) in Hawaiian.
In the distance about six and a half miles inland is the volcano Pu`u O`o vent, the eruption site for this lava; originating from the Kilauea Volcano within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

~ Dawn of Creation ~ Hawaii's Active Lava Flow Before the Sun Comes Up

One of my most popular active lava images: Pre-sunrise dawn light illuminates the scene where molten lava flows out the end of massive lava tubes stemming from seven miles upslope at Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawaii's south side. The shoreline rocks are fuming and the sea is steaming on each side of the new black sand beach, which formed recently when lava exploded into the ocean there.
Prints beautifully to 30x40-inches

Super-heated steam and sulfur dioxide dance along the ocean as the molten lave enters the ocean off to the right; all to the delight of tour boat guests~

~ Far Side of the Plume ~

Brown-tinged fine glass & sand sparkle in the sun between cooling lava formations. The plume in the distance is where lava explosively enters the sea. The glass & sand are blown downwind for miles, which is another reason to always have a good respirator available should the plume winds turn in your direction.

~ Pele's Playground ~

This field of lava is still very hot and is continuing to scorch the last remnants of forest along its path. The distant plume is where some of the molten lava has concentrated into underground tubes and pouring into the sea.

~ Pele's Pumpkin ~

... sits perched on a cooled lava pali (cliff in Hawaiian). Pele (Pay-lay) is the Hawaiian Volcano Goddess of Fire
